More information about our site search
Enter a keyword
Type a single keyword into the box.
By default, the system will search for this text string in any word but only in the title field of each entry (often the name of a person). Hence the keyword "brown" will find both BROWN and BROWNING.
To search all content, not just titles, choose "search in all content" from the first drop-down list.
To find a discrete word only, rather than a text string within a word, choose "Search for this text string as a whole word or words" from the second drop-down list. The keyword "brown" will then find BROWN but not BROWNING. The phrase "smyth pigott" will find entries containing both "SMYTH" and "PIGOTT" individually, as well as both together (that is, using the Boolean operator "OR").
To search for entries which contain all of two or more words (that is, using the Boolean operator "AND"), choose "Search for all these words" from the second drop-down list. The search phrase "smyth pigott" will then not find entries containing only "SMYTH" or "PIGOTT" but only those entries which contain both words.
- To search for a phrase, place the words inside double quotes. e.g. "Lance Armstrong"
- To search for entries without certain words or phrases, place a negative sign ("-") before it. e.g. "Lance Armstrong" -charity
Filter by section
The various sections may be searched separately or together by selecting them from the "Filter by section" box.
- Mill people is a large database of brief personal details extracted from parish registers, trade directories, censuses, narrative histories and many other sources. In most cases, the entries include dates and locations. There may be some duplication where the same information has been recorded by more than one source.
- The Biographies section contains extended accounts of the lives of individual people, whilst the Genealogy & family trees section comprises accounts of whole families.
- Mill profiles provide a short account of some specific mills.
- Mill writing is our blog on all topics relating to mills and mill people.
At the moment, this site does not include the catalogued holdings of the Archive itself nor our extensive library. These are freely searchable elsewhere, and more information may be found on our Library and research centre page.
