Rules for the Mills Archive Research Prize competition
General rules
This competition is sponsored by the Mills Archive to promote useful research in molinology. Any correspondence may be addressed to: The Research Management Board, The Mills Archive Trust, Watlington House, 44 Watlington Street, Reading, RG1 4RJ, The United Kingdom.
- Two competitions will be run simultaneously.
- There is no entry fee.
- Applicants may enter either the Research Prize competition or the Research Award competition (see below).
- Applicants must be over 18 on the date they submit their manuscript
- Researchers must choose which of the two competitions they wish to enter and inform the judges of the intended title before 1st December 2011.
- Completed manuscripts must be received by the judges by 31st May 2012.
- The winners will be announced by 31st July 2012.
- Trustees of the Mills Archive Trust and their close relatives may not enter the competition.
- The research must be on a topic connected with traditional milling, by wind, water or muscle power.
- The research must be original, previously unpublished and written in English.
- Manuscripts must be written in Microsoft Word or a similar modern word-processing package.
- Any illustrations must be provided separately and not embedded in the text.
- Submissions should be emailed to info@millsarchive.com with the text and illustrations as attachments. Alternatively, submissions may be provided on CD or DVD.
- Illustrations are not essential for either competition and the work may draw on items deposited in the Mills Archive. Use of the Archive and its holdings is recommended but is not a condition of entry.
- It is the author’s responsibility to obtain copyright clearance for material for which they do not own the copyright.
- Whilst every effort will be taken to safeguard the information submitted, the organisers cannot accept responsibility for any subsequent loss or damage.
- A copy of each entry will be retained in the Mills Archive.
- The Mills Archive Trust reserves the right to review and/or publish any entry in Mill memories without fee, but copyright in text and pictures will remain with the author(s).
- Entries will be judged by a panel comprising two trustees from the Mills Archive Trust together with one ‘lay’ member, with mill expertise appropriate to the subject matter, selected by them.
- The panel’s decisions are final and it is not obliged to explain them.
The Mills Archive Research Prize
- Entries should be a major piece of original research of about 25,000 words.
- The winner will be awarded the Mills Archive Research Prize of £500.
- The winning entry will be presented as a stand-alone individual edition, published by the Mills Archive Trust.
- The winner must agree to assist the Trust in publishing the work and publicising the prize.
- A public lecture, to be delivered at the Mills Archive in Reading, may be arranged if it seems appropriate.
The Mills Archive Research Award
- Entries should be a short research paper of about 5,000 words.
- The winner will be awarded the Mills Archive Research Award of £50.
- The winning entry will be published in a special edition of Mill memories.
- The winner must agree to assist the Trust in publishing the work and publicising the prize.
