Once again it shows the Environment Agency do not talk to the people concerned. I see they are to have consultations, but surely this should have been done before even suggesting the change. Is Mapledurham weir listed? I would think so as it is such an important part of the Thames and indeed the country when only very few of these historic wooden ones remain. Chanage is often all too easy an option, but once done it is gone forever.
How long will this work take? will it affect the water level? just two questions I need to know in order to operate the mill. But we (mill folk) know what the Envirnonment Agency thinks of mills !

The BBC reports that historic wooden weirs on the River Thames and River Kennet may be replaced under a new flood management scheme. The Environment Agency wants to replace weirs in Northmoor, Radcot and Mapledurham in Oxfordshire, Molesey in Surrey and at Blakes Lock in Berkshire

It said mechanised weirs would be safer to use and help reduce the flood risk. Retired Oxfordshire lock keeper Colin Mullineux said these weirs were among the only intact wooden paddle and rymer weirs left in Europe.

A public consultation exercise is being held until 14 August with work expected to start in summer 2010.
