Should you belong to a Mills Group?

Even in my short acquaintance with mills, I have seen Groups come and go, so is there any point to them? Recently the group in Kent (of all places!) folded because no-one would continue the good work carried on for many years by Paul Jarvis and his contemporaries.

I think that we need these Groups and the Groups need us! National bodies such as the Mills Section serve a purpose, but the real work and knowledge is in the regions. That's where all the fun is as well. It is so much easier to go to a local meeting and find out what is going on round you. The Internet helps but you have to know where to start.

All the Groups need more active members. Some groups are listed on our "important sites" http://www.millsarchivetrust.org/important_sites.htm but others are not. Does anyone care?

An article by Brian Pike in the current Sussex Mills Group Newsletter raises some important issues about how Groups communicate. Surprisingly a mechanism has been in place since before the Internet was born. The process, called COGS, seems to dying on its feet. If you want to know more Brian can be contacted via the Sussex Mills Group at http://www.sussexmillsgroup.org.uk/contact.htm

If we do not hang together, then we will certainly hang separately.

Being around since the start of COGS I feel sad that we no longer seem to have the interest from many of the regional groups that we once had. COGS is a really important forum for getting things done if everyone pulls together. The SPAB have been at the centre of organising the COGS meetings which take place twice a year. Once in March at the london HQ of SPAB, and the Oct meeting is held at a mill in a different part of the country each year.
One great hurdle to get over is that people in the north find it difficult and expensive to come down south in one day for just a meeting of a few hours; and vice versa for people in the south.
One idea might be to have two separate meetings in March. One in the north for the northern groups and one in the south. Minutes of each could be circulated to all the groups after the event. Problems could be looked at and answers given. SPAB could help via Mill News.
Some groups seem to thrive with a good membership and others seem to flounder and eventually fall by the wayside. One reason for this is that in some areas there are a great deal of 'Friends of Individual Mills' this sometimes means that the focus is on their particular mill and not on the rest of the mills in their area.
Brian is trying very hard to get COGS off the ground again so please send him your ideas and write a reply here.

I only got involved with the East Kent Mills group towards the end of its existence, my involvement was to produce a final newsletter and to chase people up to ensure that residual funds went to worthwhile places! I was keen for it to carry on, but there was just not enough young blood with the enthusiasm needed for it to survive. Perhaps such people are now around. I would be happy to give what support I could (old blood type) so keep me informed of progress

There is a lot of support for a new Kent Mills Group see http://www.millsarchivetrust.org/index.php/blogs/more/what_about_setting_up_a_kent_mills_group/
