We would like to know what they are there for.  Suggestions so far have included "filled-in air bricks" and "to allow for expansion".

"Blocks of wood are usually let into walls and floors for fixing doors or frames, hatches or other such stuff, is it possible there was machinery intended to be there? its unlikely they were filled in bricks or expansion as they'd not have bothered about expansion and filled in air bricks would have used a brick not timber, unless its an odd size."
