May I bring to your attention the meeting at the Artworkers’ Guild in London on November 13 organised by the Mills Archive for the SPAB Mills Section? It marks the successful completion of the Frank Gregory Online Project, which has occupied much of the time and energy of Archive volunteers for the last three years.
The programme celebrates Frank’s lifelong mission on behalf of mills that is now documented in his collection on line. He shared his work with millwrights, professional and amateur, who are continuing where he left off in 1998. One of them, Martin Watts, sets the tone for the morning, followed by another, Tim Martin: both knew Frank well and are committed to the sort of initial research, ensuring faithfulness to design and materials that the Mills Archive can facilitate from its extensive holdings.
The focus of the afternoon speakers is on Frank himself: Peter James whose work on preserving two Surrey windmills gained much from Frank’s encouragement and technical advice; Peter Hill, who was a close friend of Frank, will illustrate his commitment to exploring mills around the world, from Sussex to Transylvania; Frank’s daughter and son-in-law will describe the epic rescue of the Collection and their sons will recall their grandfather’s enthusiasm; Luke Bonwick, the Mills Archive Project Leader, will take us round some of the highlights of the collection. Finally a number of his friends will swop anecdotes and memories of Frank.
